Our library houses a collection of over eight thousand books. Reading flourishes at Hazelwood, and our up-to-date fiction selection reflects this. Non-fiction books cover both the subjects taught throughout the school, and leisure or outside interests such as travel, sport, craft work, horse riding, pet care and The Wars are also well represented.
There are a variety of reading certificates, and badges for librarianship, which children can earn. Participation is entirely voluntary and is designed to stimulate independent goal-setting. One of these is the Ten-Book Summer Reading Challenge, to encourage reading during the long summer holidays and more recently we have added the Mini Winter Reading Challenge to help keep the pupils reading over the Christmas break.
A highlight of the library year is World Book Day, when some children and staff come to school dressed as characters from books. Themes have ranged from "Heroes and Villains” to "Out of this World” and have generated much interest and discussion. We will often request an author to participate during an assembly on or around that day and different year groups will benefit from workshops with them. We also invite Poets in around National Poetry Day to work with the pupils.
iPads are made available in the library for children to use to access the library database or research school projects in lesson time.
Every year the librarian updates the online reading lists for each year group and these can be accessed by both the pupils and the parents on the Library management system.
The library computer system that we use at Hazelwood is Accessit which can be accessed from home by clicking on the following link https://uk.accessit.online/hzl02/.Enter the site by clicking on the Guest field on the right hand side and then input your child's library barcode (which they have been given*) in the top field by the person icon, leaving all other fields empty. Once in you will be able to see what books your child has out, when they are due to be returned as well as a list of the books they have already read to date. You will also have access to the full library catalogue and can see from this what books we have in the library which includes over 1500 online e-books.
* If your child cannot remember their library barcode or you would like further information please do not hesitate to contact the librarian.
