Sport at Hazelwood School

Our physical education curriculum is wide ranging and aims to ensure skills are transferable to many other sports and other physical activities.

Key Stage 1

The Prep School PE teachers teach PE to all children in Years 1 and 2. Depending on the time of year these lessons will involve football, pop lacrosse, athletics, cricket, hockey, netball/basketball, and gymnastics. The emphasis is on ball skills, individual skills, pair work and gradually building up to mini game situations. All children swim for one lesson a week. Lessons are taught by a fully qualified swimming teacher. It is anticipated that all children will leave Year 2 as confident swimmers. Ash take part in a swimming gala at the end of the year.

Key Stages 2 and 3

In the Prep School, the major girls' sports are lacrosse and netball (Autumn and Spring terms) and rounders in the Summer Term. The major boys' sports are football (Autumn term), rugby (Spring term) and cricket in the Summer term. Additionally, boys and girls participate in hockey, cross-country running, swimming, tennis, and athletics. After-school clubs include golf, tennis, judo, basketball, gymnastics and scuba diving.

The Sports Department encourages every child to represent the school in one of the many sports teams every term underlining its all-inclusive approach to life at Hazelwood.

Over 35 sports scholarships have been achieved in the last five years to a wide range of senior schools including Ardingly, Caterham, Charterhouse, Combe Bank, Epsom, Hurstpierpoint, King's Canterbury, Reigate Grammar, Trinity, Whitgift, Lingfield Notre Dame and Tonbridge.

Sport is taught by specialist coaches with outside help drafted in (some of them professional sportsmen and women from UK and overseas) to help hone and perfect skills. Hazelwood achieves a high standard in its sporting prowess, with a number of pupils representing their county and country.

The glorious sports fields, the purpose-built dance studio and the state-of-the art indoor sports hall are jewels in Hazelwood's crown allowing pupils to benefit from some of the best sports facilities, and coaching, in the area.
