Music

Music is an important part in the life of Hazelwood and there is an abundance of opportunity for your child to participate whatever their ability or aspiration.

Key Stage 1

A specialist music teacher fosters an enjoyment of music through singing, percussion and musical activities. The children sing and listen using activities linked to class topics/seasons/ festivals etc. The nativity and end of term plays give children an opportunity to perform for an audience. There is also the opportunity for children to have individual music lessons which include piano, violin, percussion and singing. In addition all the children in Year 2 learn to play the recorder and can be part of a choir.

Key Stages 2 and 3

Within the curriculum, every child enjoys class music. Lessons begin in the early years with rhythm work, singing and musical games, and the children's skills are developed further in the Prep School, where pupils are able to perform and compose a wide range of both vocal and instrumental music using keyboards, acoustic instruments and, in the later years,iPads.

Under the guidance of our peripatetic music specialists, more than 200 individual lessons are scheduled each week including piano, voice and all the main orchestral instruments and guitar. We offer several choirs, music ensembles and orchestras, and performance opportunities include our weekly lunchtime concerts, ?Christmas and Summer concerts, assemblies, an annual music competition, a Christmas Carol Service in the Tonbridge School Chapel and music- drama productions in Year 2, Year 4, Year 6 and Year 8. Hazelwood children have access to workshops and masterclasses, both in house and at specialist centres, and they also work with visiting professional musicians.

Hazelwood children have participated in localand international music festivals and all children are encouraged to take Trinity and ABRSM graded examinations.
