U9 Rugby boys storm the National Finals
Hazelwood's second national title was, but for RFU regulations, within reach when the U9 team emerged group winners, unbeaten and with conceding only one try at the recent National Finals held at Epsom College. The team enjoyed a stunning route to the finals conceding no tries and beating all opposition with emphatic ease. They could have sat back and become complacent thinking that the group victory was theirs for the taking. However, under the commanding eye of Mr Reay, Hazelwood's Director of Sport, the boys approached each game as if it were their first and the most important match of their fast-developing careers.
Throughout the day there was commitment, focus and amazing energy levels from all the squad members which allowed the boys to see off challenges from St Faith's School, Milbourne Lodge, The Paragon School and Heath Mount School. The team scored 17 tries and conceded only one making them Group Winners without a doubt. It would have been a fitting end to a hard-fought Finals Day if the three Group Winners could have met in the Grand Play-Off. For safety reasons this is not allowed at U9 age level.
The boys returned to school delighted to be National Group Winners and confident in the knowledge that if they had been allowed to play the other Group Winners, they would have given their all to bring the trophy and title home to Hazelwood.
A special trophy was presented to Will OE, Oliver H, Seb T-S, Adam R, Harry W, Sierk E, Alex W, Oliver McC and Daniel A in assembly. In the school's eyes, all the boys are Champions and their endeavours deserve to be recognised as those of Champions!
Congratulations go too to Mr Reay who ended a stressful day the happiest and most proud coach in the world having paced his 12,000 daily step target by lunchtime. It was a day he will never forget.
Will is in determined mood
