Pastoral Care
Pupil care is the highest priority at Hazelwood. In the Pre-Prep Form Teachers know their children very well and frequent contact between parents, Form Teachers and the Head of Chestnut helps every child to know that he or she is secure. In the Prep School, Form Tutors have daily supervision of their charges and are the first person to turn to. In addition, advice and help is always available through the Matron, the Senior Management Team and the Headmaster.
It is our aim that pupils are treated with great care at all times; teachers are always ready to listen with sympathy and devise practical solutions. Only when children feel secure can they possibly achieve their true potential. In this sense, our detailed pastoral care reinforces everything that is achieved at Hazelwood.
Form Tutors
Form Tutors provide a daily reference point for pupils, their parents and their fellow teachers. Form Tutors welcome communication at any time about the children in their charge, and would usually be the first people to be contacted in the case of a routine matter.
In each new school year a pupil has a new Form Tutor. In Years 3 and below, the Form Tutor will also be the Form Teacher, undertaking most of the teaching in that class. In Years 4 and above, the Form Tutors teach a significant number of lessons to their charges. At the same time, subject specialists are introduced to this age group.
Matron
There is a resident Matron who – together with her daytime Assistant – plays a significant role in the pastoral care of all children. Matron is responsible for running the medical aspects of pupils in the Prep School, while in Chestnut each Form Teacher should be informed of any medical points arising.
Parents
Successful pastoral care depends on ready contact between home and school. The availability of staff is high and they welcome any contact the parents feel is needed in order to produce the best from each child. Each Form and House produces its own details about how such contacts can be made, most notably with the distribution at the start of each school year of relevant telephone numbers. At any time, a message left in the School Office by telephone will be responded to by the nominated teacher within twenty-four hours, and usually a good deal quicker.
Worship
As a school with a Christian tradition and a Chapel dedicated in the Anglican Church, Hazelwood prides itself on encouraging both a religious response to the world about us and the moral values that are associated with this. Daily services and assemblies are only the tip of the iceberg; every teacher is committed to fostering the highest principles of good behaviour and care for others.
