Hazelwood’s mission is to ensure access to high quality education for all pupils. For those who need extra assistance, within and outside the classroom, the Learning Support team is on hand. Staffed by a group of specially trained individuals, with expertise in Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and other learning difficulties, Learning Support at Hazelwood is fully tailored to each child’s specific requirement. Individual Education Plans are drawn up in close liaison with the form teacher, and shared with parents. The plan identifies both the special needs and the recommendations for how to address and answer them. Progress is monitored and recorded on a regular basis.
Learning Support takes place both inside and outside of the classroom with children working either on their own or in groups. Group teaching is particularly effective in helping develop Reading Spelling and Study Skills. Access to computer assisted learning is provided and encouraged with touch typing courses offered where appropriate. Brain Gym (Movement for Learning) has been recently introduced by the Learning Support Team in order to promote a stimulating and active way to start the day for body and mind.
Hazelwood’s approach to Learning Support is a true partnership one, between the pupils, the staff and the parents with open and regular communication. The team are always on hand to discuss individual cases with the progress of each child as the shared and common goal.
