Mathematics
At Hazelwood we aim to develop each child’s understanding of mathematics to give them confidence in using and applying their knowledge in all situations. The National Curriculum is followed, but it is essential that all children be given the opportunity to extend themselves well beyond National Curriculum expectations. The department has an excellent record in examinations and continually aspires to, and attains high standards.
Lessons follow guidelines laid down in the National Numeracy Strategy and great attention is paid to developing numerical skills, both oral and written. Practical work - especially in the junior years - is utilised on a regular basis to aid reinforcement of concepts and to aid learning by discovery.
Children use Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint and Logo as well as networked CD-ROM adventure games and puzzles from the Internet. Post-examinations, Year 8 pupils even have the opportunity to invest in ‘fantasy stocks and shares’ by tracking share prices, forming data graphs and attempting to predict trends!
